The slain of a black civil rights activist named Paul Malcolm (Samuel L. Jackson) some thirty years ago has left unanswered questions between his son named John Malcolm (Danny Glover) and wife, Sarah (Angela Bassett) surrounding his untimely death with the relatives of a retired Sheriff Jack Herrod (Tom Bower) who has not been able to solve the murder case. The fate of the black American residents in a small town of Julia in South Carolina is about to change when they are forced to leave their homes in order to make way for the development of a multi-million dollar golf course. The development idea is supported by a local doctor named Dr. Ron Palmer (Giancarlo Esposito) who runs a clinic in Gospel Hill who only has his own interest to fulfill.
