Rachel Samstat (Meryl Streep) is a New York City food critic who meets and falls in love with Mark Forman (Jack Nicholson), who is also a journalist, at a friend's wedding. After a short courtship the two are married, despite the fact that Rachel is concerned that they have moved to quickly. Soon they are living the 'ideal life' as they have bought a house and Rachel is pregnant with their first child. She settles in to life as a housewife and a mother, amidst the constant annoyance of renovating a home, and also discovering that her husband has been having a little relationship on the side.
