Just after World War II, private eye Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by realtor Jake Berman (Harvey Keitel) to prove his wife (Meg Tilly) is guilty of adultery. While trying to catch her in the act things go wrong. Kitty’s infidelity or possibly a bad business deal results in the death of her lover. With the business connection as well as a police misunderstanding end up leaving Gittes in the middle. Finding himself stuck in the couple’s complicated web Gittes is pointed as a suspect, thanks to a wire recording of the fatal encounter. Kitty convinces him to investigate his own client that is her husband, and everything leads back to Chinatown.
