In the early days of World War II, a Swiss cabaret singer named Willie (Hanna Schygulla) discovers her composer boyfriend Robert Mendelsson (Giancarlo Giannini) is not only Jewish, but is a member of the underground resistance to Nazis. She has become a big star among the Nazi hierarchy in Germany and begins to tour the nation to keep up the Nazi morale. Mendelsson’s father David (Mel Ferrer) does not approve, nor like her ties to the Third Reich. Though she takes a high-ranking Nazi lover named Henkel (Karl Heinz von Hassel), she tries to remain above being labeled a Nazi collaborator. When the war ends, they are left to pick up the pieces of their lives.
