Harry Faversham (Heath Ledger) is a young British army officer, celebrating his engagement with the beautiful Ethne (Kate Hudson). When he discovers that his regiment has been called in to action in the desert of Sudan, he begins to wonder what the point of it is. After deciding to resign from the army, Faversham is ridiculed for cowardice by fellow officer friends and his fiancee Ethne. Each of them hands him the white feather, which is the symbol of cowardice, four feather in total. When Faversham decides that he must redeem himself, as well as rescue his best friend Jack Durrance (Wes Bentley), who is the only one of his friends to not give him a feather, he heads to the Sudan to take part in the fighting. On his journey to redeem himself and save his friend he also befriends Abou Fatma (Djimon Hounsou), who helps him on his journey to redeem himself of the four feathers.
